Condition: Good Plus. New Edition. First single volume edition. Originally published in seven volumes between 1834 and 1847. Includes Southey's first version of 'The Story of the Three Bears', with a wicked old lady rather than Goldilocks. Original brown blind stamped cloth binding. A few light marks to boards, a couple of small tears to head of spine. Slight bumping to edges and corners of boards. Page edges untrimmed. Lacking front free endpaper. Good solid binding. Engraved frontis and title page, both with foxing, second printed title page in red and black, engraved portrait of Southey after last page of text. Final plate and rear endpaper have light water staining. Text is very clean throughout. A nice solid example. Rarely found in the original cloth. Overall condition is Good Plus. Original publisher green textured cloth, original printed paper spine label. First edition of Southey's anonymous miscellany The Doctor, volume 4 only - however it is best best known for containing the first appearance in print of "The Three Bears." Eric Quayle wrote "Any text of the story published before 1850 is a rare and desirable possession" "The Three Bears," based on a traditional tale, appears in Volume IV on pages 318-26; this version has a "Little Old Woman" instead of Goldilocks. Goldilocks would not appear as such until 1904; in a 1858 version, she is called "Silver-Locks" (Carpenter & Pritchard, 524). Different typefaces and type sizes are used in Southey's version to indicate different characters: for example, Papa Bear's dialogue is printed in large Gothic type. Neat name on front pastedown dated 1838. Clean very good copy, spine label slightly chipped and slightly tanned.
